Physicians and Medical Learners

This program is designed specifically for physicians and medical learners to help improve your mental well-being through evidence-based self-management strategies. Participation in this program is confidential. Please read the information below to find out if this program is right for you.

Why should I participate in CBTm?

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe the core principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness as they apply to clinical practice.
  • Participants will be able to apply CBT and mindfulness strategies to manage stress in the clinical setting and enhance personal wellness.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate the use of basic CBT and mindfulness interventions in patient care

Other benefits:

  • Earn 7.5 professional development credits from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons/Mainpro+.
  • Learn about good quality resources (for yourself and patients)
  • Connect with other physicians and medical learners in a supportive environment (Zoom classes)

What will I learn about?

  • The CBT model
  • Mindfulness
  • Goal Setting
  • Healthy & Realistic Thinking
  • Basics of Behaviour Therapy
  • Healthy Living & Sleep
  • Anger, Assertiveness & Self Compassion
  • Problem-Solving
  • Coping with Stress

Is CBTm right for me?

  • I would like to enhance my patient care
  • Stress is having a negative impact on my health and well-being
  • I’d like to learn new skills to manage stress
  • I have some time and energy to put into learning and practicing new skills

Our CBTm program offers 2 options for accessing the classes:

Option 1. Facilitator-led Classes

  • Participants will be sent a link to join a Zoom videoconference session. Sessions will be 90 minutes in length, held once per week, for 5 weeks.
  • Each session will be facilitated by 1 trained clinician and 1 research assistant. The session will include a PowerPoint presentation of the CBTm material in a lecture format.
  • Participants will be invited and encouraged to discuss, comment, and ask questions of the facilitator about the material throughout the presentation.
  • Skills practice will be assigned each session relating to the material that was covered. Participants will have 1 week to work through and practice the skills learned, and this homework will be discussed at the next session.

Option 2. Web-based Course

  • Participants will receive access to a web-based self-guided CBTm course. The material within this program is identical to the material taught within the facilitator-led groups. Participants will receive access to the Session 1 material upon joining the study at which point they will be able to move through the material at their own pace.
  • The material is presented in a slide show format with pre-recorded audio to accompany each slide, in accordance with the material that they would cover if the class was held in person. Material may be completed in a single sitting or the participant can choose to pause the session and return to it at a later time.
  • Skills practice will be assigned as in the ZOOM arm through online forms that appear at the end of each session. These forms will be able to be completed online at any point during or after the session.
  • One week after completion of Session 1, participants will receive access to Session 2. This one-week timeframe prior to accessing the next session allows participants time to practice the skills learned each week before another class is held.

Research Information

In order to determine whether the CBTm programs are helpful for healthcare workers in Manitoba, participants will be asked to fill out a set of questionnaires each week and following course completion. The questionnaires will ask you about your mental health, as well as gather feedback on the sessions. Your participation and all information collected will be completely confidential.
